CiBelly & Joshua's Golden Hour Session at Rocky Neck State Park

CiBelly and Joshua chose the shore. We met them at Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme about two hours before sunset, walked the boardwalk, then the beach, and ended knee-deep in Long Island Sound when Joshua led CiBelly into the water. They both wore white, which held up well against the sand and the last of the light.

Why Rocky Neck State Park Works for Engagement Sessions

Rocky Neck sits along the Long Island Sound, offering a long stretch of beach, tidal pools, rocky outcrops, and wooded trails — all within a single state park. For photography, that variety matters. Within a 30-minute walk, you can shoot on open sand with a wide horizon, move to textured rock formations for something more dramatic, and finish under a canopy of trees for softer, dappled light. Very few locations in Connecticut offer that range.

The park is also quieter than the popular beaches further west along the coast, which means fewer strangers wandering through your background and more space for the couple to move freely. The Session: Golden Hour on the Connecticut Shore

We arrived about two hours before sunset, which gave us time to start with relaxed portraits along the boardwalk area before moving onto the beach itself. CiBelly and Joshua both wore white — a choice that held up well. Against the warm tones of the sand and the deepening blues of the water, the white clothing created a clean, timeless aesthetic. And as the sky shifted from golden to amber to deep orange, the contrast became even more striking.

• The shoreline walk. We started with the simplest direction: walk together along the water's edge. CiBelly and Joshua moved naturally — holding hands, bumping shoulders, pulling each other close when the cold water surprised their feet. These walking shots captured their energy as a couple: playful, affectionate, and completely at ease with each other.
• In the water. About halfway through the session, Joshua led CiBelly deeper into the waves. They did not plan it — it just happened. Within minutes they were knee-deep, holding each other close while the water moved around them and the last light of the day reflected off the surface. The images from this moment are some of our favorites from the entire session. The reflection of the sky on the water created a natural mirror effect that doubled the color and drama of every frame. Getting wet was CiBelly and Joshua's idea, and their willingness to embrace the moment is what made these images.
• The sunset silhouettes. As the sun dropped to the horizon, we moved to a slightly elevated section of the beach and shot directly into the light. CiBelly and Joshua in silhouette — her dress catching the breeze, his arm around her waist — with the last of the colour behind them. These backlit images only happen when the light, the location and the couple line up.

Every engagement session reinforces something we already believe: the best images come from couples who are willing to be present and spontaneous. CiBelly and Joshua did not come with a Pinterest board of poses to replicate. They came ready to be themselves — to laugh, to play, to get wet, to hold each other — and they trusted us to capture it. Planning a Beach Engagement Session in Connecticut

• Choose your timing carefully. Beach sessions live and die by the light. Schedule the session to start 90 minutes before sunset so you capture three phases: warm afternoon light, golden hour, and the rich colors right at the horizon line. In Connecticut, peak beach season runs June through September, with sunset times between 7:30 and 8:30 PM.
• Wear something that moves. Flowy dresses, lightweight fabrics, and pieces that catch the wind create beautiful motion in beach photos. Avoid stiff or structured outfits — they can look out of place against the natural, relaxed backdrop. White and neutral tones photograph beautifully at the beach. Jewel tones (emerald, deep blue, burgundy) also work well against sand and water.
• Bring a change of shoes. Wear comfortable shoes for the walk to the location, then go barefoot for the session. Bare feet on the beach look and feel natural. Heels in sand do not.
• Be open to getting wet. You do not have to wade into the ocean. But if the moment calls for it — as it did for CiBelly and Joshua — some of the most compelling beach engagement photos happen at the water's edge. Bring a towel and a change of clothes for the drive home.
• Consider the tide. At Rocky Neck, low tide exposes more sand and creates tidal pools that add visual interest. Check the tide schedule before your session and plan accordingly.
